Embracing Equity on International Women’s Day 2023

Today is International Women’s Day, a commemoration that first began in 1911, and is a global celebration recognizing the achievements made by women across the world, acknowledging the work that must still be done to continue advancing equality and equity forward. This year’s theme is “Embrace Equity.” Have you ever thought about how equity is actually different than equality? Equality means each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities. While equity recognizes that each person has different circumstances and needs, and allocates the right resources and exact opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome. It is a concept acknowledging our common goal of being recognized and included, and as articulated by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg: “We will all profit from a more diverse, inclusive society, understanding, accommodating, even celebrating our differences, while pulling together for the common good.”

Celebrating Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month, which originated as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28, authorizing the first “Women’s History Week.” The week expanded to a month in 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project. Since 1995, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.” These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.

Yesterday, President Biden issued a proclamation for this year’s Women’s History Month and stated in part: “The full participation of women is a foundational tenet of democracy. Women — often women of color — have been on the frontlines, fighting for and securing equal rights and opportunity throughout our country’s history as abolitionists, civil rights leaders, suffragists, and labor activists. Women continue to lead as advocates for reproductive rights, champions of racial justice, and LGBTQI+ equality. Throughout history, these women have opened the doors of opportunity for subsequent generations of dreamers and doers. As community leaders, educators, doctors, scientists, childcare providers, and more, women power our economy and lead our Nation. As first responders and service members, they stand watch over our lives and liberties. As innovators, entrepreneurs, and essential workers in every industry, they represent the very best of America.”

We will be posting about the stories of many women this month, including some wonderful women here at Bailey Glasser.

PRC Designated Recipient of $560,000 Cy Pres Award

The Pension Rights Center, a nonprofit consumer organization dedicated to protecting and promoting retirement security, was designated the recipient of a $560,000 cy pres award by Bailey & Glasser, LLP.

A cy pres award allows for the distribution of leftover funds from the settlement of a lawsuit to be disbursed to charitable organizations whose mission generally aligns with the purpose of the lawsuit. BG partner Gregory Porter commented that we are “delighted that undisbursed money is going to the Pension Rights Center, which has been working for 47 years to protect retirement security for workers and retirees, particularly for lower and moderate wage earners.” To learn more visit The Pension Rights Center website.

Every February, Bailey Glasser honors Black History Month. As part of our commemoration, we post all month long across our social media channels a selection of Black Americans who made impactful contributions in all the states where our law firm have offices. Please enjoy this short video that highlight’s this year’s social media posts for this important month.

As noted at the end of this video: ”Won’t it be wonderful when Black history and Native American history and Jewish history and all of U.S. history is taught from one book. Just U.S. history.” Maya Angelou

Bailey Glasser’s Support of the Pension Rights Center

Bailey Glasser was delighted to sponsor the Pension Rights Center’s event on October 26th celebrating the life and legacy of Karen Ferguson. Karen was the Founder of the Pension Rights Center and a tireless advocate who dedicated her life to protecting the retirement security of workers, retirees, and their families. In further recognition of Karen’s legacy, we are also glad to direct a $24,831 cy pres award to the Pension Rights Center to support their mission ensuring individuals receive and retain the retirement benefits they have earned. We have deep experience fighting for the rights of workers and retirees across the country. Our lawyers have recovered hundreds of millions of dollars under the ERISA law for our clients and have fought tenaciously (including winning before the United States Supreme Court) to protect their money and legal rights.

Bailey Glasser Obtains Midsize Mansfield Rule Certification

Bailey & Glasser, LLP announced today that it is among only 26 law firms nationwide to achieve the first ever Midsize Mansfield Rule Certification. Created by the Diversity Lab, the Midsize Mansfield Rule Certification is designed to increase diversity at law firms by broadening the pool of candidates considered for positions at all levels. It measures whether law firms have affirmatively considered at least 30% women lawyers, underrepresented racial and ethnic lawyers, LGBTQ+ lawyers, and lawyers with disabilities for attorney positions, leadership and governance roles, equity partner promotions, and formal client pitch opportunities.

“Congratulations to everyone at the firm who helped make this certification possible,” said Benjamin Bailey, a founding partner of Bailey Glasser. “We recognize that solving the most consequential legal issues for our clients requires us to build a diverse legal team. Our participation in the Midsize Mansfield Rule Certification program is helping us do that. We look forward to continuing to work with the Diversity Lab on the next level of Certification for 2022 as we continue to foster a more inclusive workplace.”
